Devastating floods throughout central and southeastern West Virginia on Thursday, June 23rd, 2016 killed 26 people and left thousands without power, homes or access to vital supplies as heavy rains overflowed rivers and streams and washed out roads in 44 of the state’s 55 counties.
Parts of the state suffered as many as 10 inches of rain. President Obama declared the flooding a major disaster and ordered federal aid be sent to Kanawha, Greenbrier and Nicholas counties. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin said it was the worst flooding in a century for some parts of the state.
